Pink Fairy Armadillo

Image via Wikipedia
After writing about all those burrowing mole creatures, I suddenly remembered that I had always intended to include the Pink Fairy Armadillo. When it came down to it, I completely forgot! They're only about 10 centimetres long so maybe it's kinda, sorta understandable. But they're pink and armed with huge claws on their forelegs, so maybe not. Actually, they can also bury themselves beneath sand in seconds, so I suppose they must have done that.

Pink Fairy Armadillos are nocturnal and found in central Argentina where all is desert and thorn and cactus. No wonder they prefer to go underneath it all! They primarily eat ants and their larvae, so they tend to stay near ant colonies. Their armour works great for protection against the chaffing and scratching of the underground lifestyle. Even their head is armoured so that they can plough through the ground without giving themselves a headache.

Pink Fairies are the smallest of all the armadillos. Hilariously, there's another one called the Big Hairy Armadillo! The Pink Fairy and the Big Hairy! They either have constant arguments over politics and lifestyle or are VERY special friends indeed. I don't even know if anyone will get that but I just HAD to have that joke on here!

  3. @texwisgirl: That's definitely one way of looking at it! I think they add a little bit of grotesque in there. I quite like the pinch of bitterness with all that pink, furry sweetness!

@Crunchy: Ha! I think you might be right!

@Fuzzball Dave: I'm pleased to see you say that!
